Why don't aluminum cans decompose rapidly like a nail might rust?

Despite the fact that aluminum metal is easily and rapidly oxidized by air to aluminum oxide, we do not see aluminum cans and aluminum foil decomposing before our eyes (as a nail might rust). Explain this observation
