Christmas cake icing?

My Christmas cake recipe tells me to coat the cake with apricot jam before adding the marzipan. I hate apricots and if I purchase a jar of this jam it will never be eaten. So, is it ok to coat the cake with rasberry jam (seedless) and how soon after adding the marzipan can I ice the cake?
