What level of ownership does a company have when it buys another but allows it to operate under their same nam?

Depends. It may have partnered or full out bought out the company. It's no way to really tell. They own the rights to the name if they buy it out. Wachovia was bought out by Wells Fargo and operates as a subsidiary, keeping it's name intact.
